Everything you need to know about backup types, products, scripts, managed services, and PrecisionTech's backup solutions in India.
1
What is a backup solution?
A backup solution is any system, method, or tool that creates copies of your business data — servers, workstations, virtual machines, databases, and SaaS applications (Microsoft 365, Google Workspace) — so you can restore them after data loss, ransomware, hardware failure, or accidental deletion. Backup solutions range from enterprise-grade proprietary products (Acronis Cyber Protect, Veeam Backup & Replication) to lightweight scripts (rsync, robocopy, PowerShell) and fully managed hybrid approaches. The right choice depends on your workload count, RTO/RPO requirements, compliance needs, and budget.
2
What is the difference between cloud-to-cloud, local-to-cloud, and local-to-local backup?
Cloud-to-cloud backup protects SaaS data (Microsoft 365, Google Workspace) by backing it up to a separate cloud storage — because Microsoft and Google do not provide native point-in-time backup. Local-to-cloud backup copies on-premises servers, VMs, and workstations to cloud storage (Acronis Cloud, AWS S3, Azure Blob) for offsite protection. Local-to-local backup copies data to NAS, SAN, external drives, or tape — often for air-gapped or compliance-heavy environments. Many businesses use a hybrid: local copy for fast restore plus cloud copy for disaster recovery.
3
Does PrecisionTech only offer Acronis, or do you support other backup options?
PrecisionTech covers every backup option — we do not push a single vendor. We offer: (1) Proprietary products — Acronis Cyber Protect, Veeam Backup & Replication, and other enterprise platforms. (2) Scripts and custom tools — rsync, robocopy, PowerShell, cron jobs for Linux and Windows. (3) Managed backup services — 24×7 monitoring, policy management, restore testing, DR drills. (4) Hybrid solutions — mix products and scripts for cost optimization. We assess your environment and recommend the right fit — no over-engineering, no vendor lock-in.
4
Can you use rsync or robocopy for backup instead of Acronis or Veeam?
Yes. rsync (Linux, macOS) and robocopy (Windows) are robust, lightweight tools for file-level backup. They support incremental sync, scheduling via cron or Task Scheduler, and can copy to NAS, S3, or cloud storage. PrecisionTech designs and configures rsync/robocopy backup scripts for cost-sensitive environments — no licence cost. Limitations: no application-consistent backup for databases (you need separate pg_dump, mysqldump, or SQL backup), no built-in ransomware protection, and no instant VM recovery. For critical workloads, we often recommend a hybrid: Acronis for servers, rsync for Linux file shares.
5
Do I need to backup Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace?
Yes. Microsoft and Google do not provide native point-in-time backup for M365 or Google Workspace. Their retention policies (e.g., 30 days for deleted items) are not true backup — you cannot restore to an arbitrary point in time, and admins can permanently delete data. Ransomware, accidental deletion, and insider threats can cause irreversible data loss. PrecisionTech provides cloud-to-cloud backup for M365 (Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams) and Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Calendar) using Acronis, Veeam, or similar — with immutable backups and configurable retention.
6
What is the 3-2-1-1-0 backup rule?
The 3-2-1-1-0 rule is a best-practice backup strategy: (1) 3 copies of your data — original plus 2 backups. (2) 2 different media types — e.g., local disk + cloud, or NAS + tape. (3) 1 copy offsite — so a fire or flood does not destroy all copies. (4) 1 immutable or air-gapped copy — protected from ransomware (cannot be encrypted or deleted by attackers). (5) 0 backup errors — verified, tested restores. PrecisionTech designs backup strategies that meet this rule for your environment.
7
What is RTO and RPO in backup?
RPO (Recovery Point Objective) is the maximum acceptable data loss — how far back in time you can restore. If RPO is 1 hour, you need backups at least every hour. RTO (Recovery Time Objective) is the maximum acceptable downtime — how quickly you must be back online after a disaster. If RTO is 4 hours, your restore process must complete within 4 hours. PrecisionTech helps you define RTO/RPO based on business impact, then designs backup schedules, retention, and DR strategies to meet them. Acronis supports RPO as low as 15 minutes (CDP) and RTO under 15 minutes (instant VM recovery).
8
What is managed backup service?
A managed backup service means PrecisionTech handles your backup infrastructure end-to-end: deployment, policy configuration, 24×7 monitoring, alert triage, monthly health reports, restore testing, and quarterly DR drills. You do not need in-house backup expertise — we ensure backups run, alerts are resolved, and restores are validated. We also provide emergency ransomware incident response. Managed backup is available for Acronis, Veeam, and hybrid (product + script) environments.
9
How does PrecisionTech's free backup assessment work?
Contact PrecisionTech via the enquiry form. Our team reviews your environment — workloads (servers, VMs, databases, SaaS), current backup status (if any), compliance needs (GDPR, DPDP, HIPAA), and RTO/RPO. We schedule a brief call to understand your priorities and budget. Within 2–3 business days, we deliver a free backup assessment report with recommendations: which backup type (product, script, or hybrid) fits best, estimated costs, and implementation timeline. No obligation. We do not push a single vendor — we recommend the right fit.
10
Is PrecisionTech an Authorized Acronis Partner?
Yes. PRECISION e-Technologies Pvt Ltd (PrecisionTech.in) is an Authorized Acronis Reseller and Managed Service Provider in India. We sell Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud Backup licences (workstation, server, VM, Microsoft 365), deploy and configure the platform, and provide 24×7 managed monitoring and emergency ransomware recovery. We are also certified to design and implement Veeam, rsync, robocopy, and hybrid backup solutions.
11
Can you backup VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines?
Yes. PrecisionTech supports agentless backup for VMware vSphere (5.5–8.x) and Microsoft Hyper-V (2012 R2–2022) using Acronis or Veeam. A single agent on a backup gateway can protect all VMs on the hypervisor without installing software inside each VM. Features include instant VM recovery (mount backup as live VM in under 2 minutes), backup copy to cloud, and cross-hypervisor migration. We also support Nutanix AHV, Citrix Hypervisor, and KVM.
12
Can you backup SQL Server, Oracle, and PostgreSQL?
Yes. PrecisionTech supports application-consistent backup for Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Database, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MongoDB. Acronis and Veeam provide native backup with SQL-aware VSS integration. For cost-sensitive environments, we design custom scripts using pg_dump, mysqldump, or SQL Server native backup. We ensure backup consistency (no corrupt restores) and test restore procedures.
13
What is immutable backup and why is it important for ransomware?
An immutable backup is stored in a format that cannot be modified or deleted — even by an admin or attacker. Ransomware typically encrypts backups if they are writable; immutable storage (e.g., Acronis Cloud, S3 Object Lock, WORM storage) prevents this. PrecisionTech recommends at least one immutable backup copy as part of the 3-2-1-1-0 strategy. Acronis also offers blockchain notarization for cryptographic proof of backup integrity.
14
Does backup data need to stay in India for DPDP Act 2023 compliance?
The Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 (DPDP Act) requires that personal data of Indian citizens be stored within India when specified by the government. For backup data containing personal data, India data residency is recommended. PrecisionTech offers Acronis Cloud storage in India (data centres in Mumbai, Singapore) and can configure backup to India-only regions. We also support hybrid: local backup in India + cloud copy in India for compliance.
15
What is Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS)?
DRaaS is a managed service where your protected servers can be failed over to a cloud or secondary site in the event of a disaster — and run as live VMs until your primary site is restored. Acronis Cyber Protect includes optional DRaaS: failover to Acronis Cloud, run workloads there, then fail back when ready. PrecisionTech designs DR runbooks, tests failover procedures, and provides 24×7 support for DR events.
16
How much does backup cost?
Backup costs vary by approach. Proprietary products (Acronis, Veeam): typically ₹999–₹5,999 per workload per year for M365/workstation/server/VM. Scripts (rsync, robocopy): no licence cost — only deployment and managed support. Managed backup: additional monthly fee for 24×7 monitoring, reports, DR drills. Cloud storage: per-TB cost for Acronis Cloud, or use your own S3/Azure. PrecisionTech provides a detailed quote after the free assessment. We design cost-optimized hybrid solutions — e.g., Acronis for critical workloads, scripts for secondary data.
17
Can you migrate from our current backup to a new solution?
Yes. PrecisionTech supports migration from legacy backup (e.g., Symantec, Backup Exec, old Acronis, Veeam, or custom scripts) to a new solution. We assess your current setup, design the target architecture, deploy the new solution in parallel, run both for a period to validate, then decommission the old backup. We ensure no data loss during transition and document the new runbooks.
18
What happens if we get hit by ransomware?
PrecisionTech has a dedicated 24×7 ransomware incident response team. Steps: (1) Isolate affected systems to prevent spread. (2) Identify patient-zero (first infected machine). (3) Assess backup integrity — ensure backups were taken before infection and are clean. (4) Restore from the last known-good backup. (5) Rebuild or restore systems. We use Acronis Safe Restore (malware scan before restore) to avoid restoring infected data. If you have immutable backups, recovery is typically possible within hours. Contact us immediately if you suspect ransomware.
19
Do you offer backup for Tally and other accounting software?
